The pitch of the 3₁₂ helix (roughly 2.7 residues per turn), while slightly greater than the 3₁₄ helix, results in a helical motif reminicent of the &alpha-helix. Like the 3₁₄ helix, the 3₁₂ helix also prefers two particular substitution patterns. Both the L - C₃ (green) and D - C₂ (magenta) result in equatorial positioning of sidechain R groups. Notably, the helical dipole moment of the 3₁₂ helix is opposite of the 3₁₄ and aligns with the dipole moment of the &alpha-helix.
